Landscape Gardening

Landscape gardening is the art of creating beautiful gardens and preserving greenery. To attain beautiful and creative landscape gardening you should understand the basic principles. Before we learn something about those principles, you must know that landscape gardening is all about creativity and imaginations, so there are no hard rules. All you need to do is to follow your imagination and follow these principles as your guidelines.

Unity

Unity is the one of the most basic principles of the landscape gardening. Here, unity also means consistency and repetition. You can create unity by repeating some plants or group of plants or particular type of decoration. Unity means you place, arrange and repeat all elements of gardening in such a manner that they create a harmony. You can create unity by arranging elements in any system according to height, colour, texture, size or others factors.

Theme

Your landscaping should be done around a theme. Select a theme and arrange elements according to it. Like you can take butterflies as your theme and you can keep plants which attract butterflies. You can place statues or other decorations which match with that theme.

Simplicity

Though creativity is very important for landscape gardening but simplicity is its inherent part. Do not mix and match things out of limits. Be simple in selection of your theme, plants, colours and other things. If you make complex designs, onlooker will get confused and won't be able to focus on your design. Choose two or three colours and repeat them.

Balance

Balance among various elements of design is also a very important aspect in landscape gardening. Balance can be symmetrical and asymmetrical. In a symmetrical balance, garden is divided into equal sections. Same types of elements are placed at equal intervals in all the sections of the garden. Symmetry can be created by arranging elements of same shape, size, colour, length, height and form.

Asymmetrical balance is complex and abstract. Rather than creating simple symmetry in the various features of the various elements, there is a balance in designing. That is where creativity comes in.

Colour

Colour is another crucial element of landscape gardening. When you use bright colours like yellow, red or orange, it seems that things are coming closer while cool colours like pastels or blues seem to keeping things away from you. Neutral colours like grey, white or black are good for background. A good play of colours in landscape gardening definitely catches the attention of eyes.

Natural Transition

Avoid abrupt changes in designing your garden. Go for a gradual transition in different elements like textures, sizes, shapes, colours or others. It can be either ascending or descending.

While designing a garden, it is not necessary to incorporate all the principles. Rather these are the guidelines which can help you arrange things in an attractive manner.
